Salt Spring Island - a very special place.
The Gulf Islands of British Columbia are sometimes called The Martha's Vineyard of the West Coastî and Canadaís Caribbeanî. This is an area of extraordinary natural beauty, sheltered in the Georgia Strait, between the mainland of British Columbia and the 300-mile long Vancouver Island.
Salt Spring Island is Canada's arts and crafts island, and has been named one of the top artistic communities in North America. Since the late sixties, artists and crafts people have been drawn from all over the world. The artistic and cultural richness of the island is goes far beyond what the size of the community might suggest. Indeed, the community includes many world-renowned individuals and many others who are shown in major galleries and museums in cities such as New York, London and Paris.
As you'll see in photos throughout this site, this is an extraordinarily beautiful area of forest, rocks and sea. Youíll also find spectacular scenery and great outdoor recreation. The climate is termed Mediterranean. Itís pleasantly hot in the summer without being oppressive. The winters are very mild, and yet itís only a short trip to Whistler-Blackcomb, one of the premier ski destinations in any country and home of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
People say they find on Salt Spring escape from the rat race, a clean environment, interesting people, and a vibrant, small-town atmosphere ó and all with convenient access to Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle. If you like to get out and about, youíll probably find yourself rubbing elbows with artists, business people, hippies, labourers and multi-millionaires. Or you may, as some do, prefer the privacy of the forested grounds of All the Best.
When deciding what clothing to bring to the Gulf Islands in the cooler months, think "layers" and include something for warmth, something for wind, and something for water. Even in the summer, it is a good idea to bring something to keep the chill out on evening strolls by the ocean. Comfortable walking shoes are a must year-round.
Recreational opportunities abound.
ArtSpring offers top performances by local and touring artists. Particularly in the warmer weather, there are numerous cultural events. Outdoor activities include kayaking, sailing, hiking, bird-watching, golf, swimming (salt water and lake), scuba-diving, horseback riding, hang-gliding, fresh and salt water fishing, and tennis. Youíll find gourmet dining at $100 per person, or pizza delivery ó whatever suits.
